PRIVACY POLICY

PRIVACY POLICY (CFML)

For the purposes of the EU General Data Protection Regulation ((EU) 2016/679) (“GDPR”), I, Janie Chang, Author, am the “data controller”. Accordingly, I have developed this privacy policy in order for you to understand how I collect, use, communicate, disclose, safeguard and otherwise make use of your personally identifiable information (“Personal Data”). If you have any questions about this policy or about how I use your Personal Data, please contact me via the Contact form on this Website.

It is my policy to respect your privacy regarding any information I may collect from you or which you may provide to me, via CanadiansForMediaLiteracy.org (the “Website”)  in the circumstances set out below. I will only collect and use your Personal Data where:

  • I have lawful grounds to do so, including to comply with my legal obligations;
  • I have legitimate interests in using your Personal Data and your interests and fundamental rights do not override those interests.

This policy is effective as of July 30, 2026. I review my privacy practices and as such may change this privacy policy from time to time. Please check this page frequently to ensure you are familiar with its current content.

  1. DATA COLLECTION

Data this website collects automatically: the Website automatically collects certain information when you visit – such as the type of browser and operating system you are using, and the domain name of your Internet service provider. I do not link this information with any Personal Data.

Data I collect via forms on the Website. I only collect Personal Data where you choose to interact with me on the Website in the following ways:

When you use the Contact form, you provide information such as:

  • Email address
  • First and Last name

When you Sign the Open Letter, you provide information such as:

  • Email address
  • First and Last Name
  • Pen name (optional)
  • Description you wish to use with your signature to the Open Letter (optional)
  • Your province
  • URL to your website or sample of your writing

Data collection for security purposes. The Website uses Turnstile, developed by Cloudflare, Inc. (Cloudflare), a pro-privacy website security tool that collects data for the sole purpose of protecting the Website against malicious activity by distinguishing human users from bots and blocking bot traffic. Turnstile runs invisibly in the background when you use the forms listed above. Turnstile processes a variety of client-side signals (“Signals”) such as client IP address, TLS Fingerprint, User-Agent Header and Sitekey and associated origin. Cloudflare does not have the ability to directly identify any individuals from any of the Signals Turnstile collects, including IP addresses. For more details, please see Turnstile’s Privacy Addendum.

  1. USE OF PERSONAL DATA

I will only use your Personal Data when the law allows me to. Most commonly, I use your Personal Data from the Contact form to respond to your questions, comments and requests.

When you Sign the Open Letter, the form generates an email with your information and sends it to admin@canadiansformedialiteracy.org.  I use the information to validate your identity as a member of the literary community.

  1. SHARING OF PERSONAL DATA

I take your privacy seriously and will not share your Personal Data with others, except as permitted by applicable law or as set out below:

When you Sign the Open Letter, the only information I include online with your name as a signatory is:

  1. Your name or pen name
  2. Your province
  3. The description you have indicated you wish to display, such as “Author” or “Poet-Laureate” or “Bestselling Author”, etc.

Please note that all of your information in a, b, and c is available in the public domain.

There is no Third Party involved with the Website. There is no individual or organization I will share your email address with.

  1. RETENTION PERIODS FOR USE OF YOUR PERSONAL DATA

I will use and store your Personal Data only for as long as necessary, bearing in mind the uses of your Personal Data as described in this privacy policy and otherwise as communicated to you.

When you Sign the Open Letter, a copy of the form-generated email stays in the admin Inbox as a record, should I need to prove that you gave consent to add your name to the Open Letter. Once this campaign is complete, I will delete permanently all emails sent and received.
